NM Brujos 2019 in Review
As 2019 draws to a close, a short look back at the year that was for the New Mexico Brujos Rugby Club, and a brief look toward 2020.
The NM Brujos started 2019 with a bang with the 3rd annual Rugby is a Drag...Show having its most successful year. The fundraiser raised over $1500 for our corporate partner Casa Q, and and raised money to help out the club and New Mexico Youth Rugby as well. Speaking of Rugby is a Drag, The 4th installment of Rugby is a Drag is set for January 18th (a month from today!) and tickets are on sale now here:
Spring 2019 saw the Brujos play their best rugby of the year notching a convincing 29 - 19 win over the Albuquerque Aardvarks, and a hard fought 41 - 38 win against the rival Santa Fe Santos that secured a second place finish in Rio Grande Rugby Union standings and a well won playoff berth.
The Brujos would ultimately lose in the first round of the playoffs, but the experience left them hungry for future success in upcoming seasons.
Will the Brujos match last spring's success in 2020? Find out in a few short months as the NM Brujos 2020 Spring Schedule is out now:
In the Summer 2019 the Brujos took their talents to...football?
That's right, the Brujos formed an interesting partnership with Albuquerque's indoor football team the Duke City Gladiators, and played exhibition matches during halftime of a couple of last season's games. These exhibitions were highly valuable in terms of rugby awareness and team exposure, and a partnership the Brujos hope to continue going forward.
The Fall of 2019 witnessed the Brujos forming a exciting new tournament partnership and ended with the Brujos taking home a long overdue trophy. Last October the NM Brujos partnered with the Phoenix Storm and the Dallas Diablos for the very first Southwest #PrideInRugby Fiesta in celebration of the upcoming 20th year of IGR. This even was a tremendous success, and plans are already under weigh to make the 2020 version even bigger and better. Another highlight of the Fall of 2019 was a NM Brujos win in the 2019 High Desert Classic, which saw the Brujos take home a very handsome cow skull trophy they plan on holding on to for years to come.
Overall 2019 was a very positive year for the team, and a big step forward toward the type of team involvement, exposure, and commitment it takes to sustain long term success. 2020 promises to be even better with exciting announcements coming about new tournaments, new corporate partnerships, and new ways for the team to stay connected with their fans and former teammates. All beginning with this year's 4th annual Rugby is a Drag...Show! in one month, get your tickets now and see you all there.
It's been a hoot covering the NM Brujos with you all this year, see you in 2020!
